Catholic Religious Education (CREED)

Catholic Religious Education (CREED) is a traditional classroom program for students in grades K-6 with options for older students depending on their sacramental needs or educational desires.

At St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, we assist families in their religious, moral, and spiritual formation. We understand and respect that parents are the primary educators of their children, teaching by word and example. Our parish catechists support the parents and students by providing quality religious education in a nurturing, faith-filled environment in accordance with Archbishop Aquila and United States Conference of Catholic Bishops or (USCCB).

Through the cooperative efforts of parents, committed catechists, and willing students, it is our goal that together we will help our children grow in their love for God, develop their given talents, and live as strong, morally responsible, engaged Catholic members of our community.

WHAT WE OFFER

A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

In accordance with the “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People” established by the (USCCB) each Diocese must establish a Safe Environment Program. This program requires each parish in the diocese to cooperate with parents, civil authorities, educators, and community organizations to provide education and training for children, youth, parents, ministers, educators and others about ways to create and maintain a safe environment for children.

All volunteers and staff are mandated to complete our diocese’s program “Called to Protect" prior to working among our community.

EXPERIENCED CATECHISTS

Our catechists and assistants are devoted, faithful Catholics from St. John the Baptist community. They dutifully volunteer their time to the children of our parish. We offer a training session for all volunteers which prepare them for their year with your child. They are generously rewarded by assisting families in imparting our soul saving faith, sacraments, and Catholic traditions to the children.

If you have ever thought you may be interesting in this type of volunteer work, please call with any questions. Catechists with children in the program receive a discounted tuition for their efforts.

WHAT WE EXPECT

CATHOLIC FAMILY LIFE

Parents to honor their minimal Catholic obligations by:

  • Attending regular Mass as a family
  • Receiving the sacrament of Penance during the holy seasons of Lent
       and Advent

For Sacramental aged students enrolled in our program, it is a mandatory requirement that they attend weekly Mass and must “sign-in” each week. It is our pastoral duty as educators of the Catholic faith that we ensure the proper preparation of our candidates. What they learn from our books is only part of their religious development.  Being an active participant alongside loved ones and their parish family teaches them so much more.

Any Sacramental aged student who has 4 or more unexplained absences from Mass and/or class within the school year will be asked to return to the program the following year to become better prepared to receive their Sacrament.

REGISTERING REQUIREMENTS IN A SACRAMENTAL YEAR

IN the Archdiocese of Denver, students are required to complete two consecutive years of Catholic religious instruction prior to receiving a sacrament here at St. John the Baptist.

For instance, families who desire their child to receive First Holy Communion in May of their Second Grade year, would be required to have that child complete a first grade Catholic instructional course prior to registering for our preparatory First Holy Communion second grade class.

If they have received a year of instruction at another parish, please provide written confirmation from that institution so it can be recorded.

If your child is entering into a sacramental year, please see the menu item to your right for detailed information.

At the end of your child’s second year of catechesis, it will be determined if your child has been properly prepared by your child's Catechist, Liz Smith the Catholic Religious Education Coordinator and Fr. Humberto our Pastor.

WHAT WE ENCOURAGE

We encourage families to consider the possibility of a few service hours with your child such as at our St. John's Food Bank or maybe join our vibrant music ministry as a family! Please see our ministry page here on our website for more ideas.
