RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR CHILDREN & TEENS

“Faith is a journey of illumination: it starts with the humility of recognizing oneself as needy of salvation and arrives at the personal encounter with Christ, who calls one to follow him on the way of love. On this model the Church has formulated the itinerary of Christian Initiation to prepare for Baptism, Confirmation (or Chrism) and the Eucharist.”

~Pope Benedict XVI Angelus: 29 October, 2006

RCIC AND RCIT AT ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

Our RCIC/RCIT classes are offered for the children of our community who are

  • Seeking to become Catholics and are unbaptized.
  • Baptized Christian children, seeking to become Catholic
  • Catholic children who are out of sync with their sacraments of initiation and need to prepare themselves
  • Children who have been out of formal Catholic instruction for a year or more and are in need of receiving one or more sacraments of initiation

The Sacraments of Christian Initiation are: Baptism, Confirmation and First Holy Communion

TAKEN FROM THE “RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS”

"The Rite of Christian Initiation is the normal way for unbaptized persons and those who have been baptized in another Christian tradition to become a Catholic, through a process of discerning and ritualizing the stages of gradual conversion. The rite of Christian initiation is designed for people of catechetical age who consciously and freely seek the living God and enter the way of faith and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their hearts. By God's help they will be strengthened spiritually during their preparation and at the proper time will receive the sacraments fruitfully." (RCIA Introduction 1)

At St. John's we welcome all people to follow their journey into the Catholic Church through the doors of St. John the Baptist parish community.

WHAT WE OFFER

A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

In accordance with the “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People” established by the (USCCB) each Diocese must establish a Safe Environment Program. This program requires each parish in the diocese to cooperate with parents, civil authorities, educators, and community organizations to provide education and training for children, youth, parents, ministers, educators and others about ways to create and maintain a safe environment for children.

All volunteers and staff are mandated to complete our diocese’s program “Called to Protect" prior to working among our community.

EXPERIENCED CATECHISTS

Our catechists and assistants are devoted, faithful Catholics from St. John the Baptist community. They dutifully volunteer their time to the children of our parish. We offer a training session for all volunteers which prepare them for their year with your child. They are generously rewarded by assisting families in imparting our soul saving faith, sacraments, and Catholic traditions to the children.

If you have ever thought you may be interesting in this type of volunteer work, please call with any questions. Catechists with children in the program receive a discounted tuition for their efforts.

WHAT WE EXPECT

CATHOLIC FAMILY LIFE

Parents to honor their minimal Catholic obligations by:

  • Attending regular Mass as a family
  • Receiving the sacrament of Penance during the holy seasons of Lent
       and Advent

For Sacramental aged students enrolled in our program, it is a mandatory requirement that they attend weekly Mass and must “sign-in” each week. It is our pastoral duty as educators of the Catholic faith that we ensure the proper preparation of our candidates. What they learn from our books is only part of their religious development.  Being an active participant alongside loved ones and their parish family teaches them so much more.

Any Sacramental aged student who has 4 or more unexplained absences from Mass and/or class within the school year will be asked to return to the program the following year to become better prepared to receive their Sacrament.

  WHAT WE ENCOURAGE

We encourage families to consider the possibility of a few service hours with your child such as at our St. John's Food Bank or maybe join our vibrant music ministry as a family! Please see our ministry page here on our website for more ideas.
