The Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament just for those who are near death or dying. This sacrament can be given to those who are seriously ill, facing surgery, or experiencing any form of physical, spiritual, or emotional illness. Those who receive this sacrament are anointed on the forehead and the hands with blessed oil. The priest says, “Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.” The faithful may receive this sacrament more than once in their lifetime as changing health warrants it.
This sacrament, instituted by Christ, is a gift of the Holy Spirit which brings peace, strength, and courage to its recipient. It is designed to “lead the person to healing of the soul and also of the body if such is God’s will.” It also unites man’s suffering to that of Christ.
St. John the Baptist Church offers the sacrament on an individual basis by contacting our parish office at 303-776-0737. The church offers this convenient way for people to receive the grace of the sacrament. It also allows those being anointed to celebrate this sacrament with other members of the community in need of the grace of anointing or simply with friends and family who have a desire to support and comfort those among us who are in special need of our prayers and love.
