Volunteer
Webster’s Dictionary describes a volunteer as someone who offers himself willingly to a cause. Our cause is the make our children’s school the best that it can be.
Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year at St. John the Baptist Catholic School. We look forward to a year of growth, vision and unity. Together, we can create a healthy, secure learning environment. But to achieve this, each and every one of us are needed to give of ourselves.
Volunteering gives us a chance to get to know our teachers, staff, fellow parents and our children’s peers. It gives us the opportunity to teach our children a valuable lesson, to give of themselves, willingly. There is a certain amount of pride a child feels when their parents are recognized as volunteers at their school. And there are many different ways to give of your time and talent, not all involving having to be at the school during the day.
Below is our volunteer information. We ask that each family contribute 15-20 hours during the school year. Look over the list of volunteer opportunities and check what would best work for you. If you have any questions or suggestions, please call on us.
Please know that the time you give to St. John’s can make the difference between a good year and a great one!

Parent volunteers are needed to assist teachers with playground supervision during lunch recess. Construction activities dictate where and how recess will take place, but generally two or three parents are needed each day. This is a great opportunity for friends to give a couple of hours together and then have lunch or coffee before pick up. Individuals and groups may sign up in the school office or call one of the chairpersons. Commit to once a week, once a month, or as often as you can. Recess is from 11: 10 to 1 :20.

St. John's parking lot patrol is looking for volunteers to help with morning drop off and afternoon pick up duties. Volunteers will need to make a commitment one month prior to allow for scheduling. These duties take approximately 30 minutes and include setting up cones and ensuring correct parking lot procedures are followed.

The mission of this program is to welcome new school families by providing information and resources through the pairing of new families with experienced families at grade level. If you are a new family and have not yet been contacted, please call Sara at the above number. Experienced families are still needed for this school year. This is an important asset to our school and a great opportunity to give a little of your time, experience and love to the new families of St. John's!

The teacher appreciation committee is a group of parent volunteers from the school primarily responsible for organizing and implementing various activities that recognize and support the work the teachers give to the school. Several functions have been recognized as regular support for the teachers and sometimes staff of the school. Those functions are birthdays, Catholic Schools Week, the Archdioces' banquet, a luncheon during National Teacher Appreciation week, and additional activities or gifts of appreciation given to the teachers during the year.

The committee organizes the resale of uniforms. All families may donate clean like new or gently used items. Items may be purchased by all families as needed. Look for Sue at the Back-to-School picnic.
Volunteer opportunities are available in many of the classrooms at the discretion of each teacher. Although your student's teacher will determine the need and the nature of help desired, please indicate your interest on this page and we will pass the information on to the teacher. More detailed information regarding classroom help will be available from each teacher at the Open House in late September.

This is a new group for dads who would like the opportunity to give some of their time in support of the school community. Add your name to the list and we will call you when we need a little extra help with various tasks. Our first project will be moving the furniture, computers, and televisions back into the empty grade school classrooms in mid-August. Future needs may include such activities as handy-man fix-its or high-tech consultation. If you can offer support with a special interest, talent, or hobby let us know that too.
During the year various volunteer opportunities arise that support the students and school staff. They include the following activities as well as others that may develop.
- Making copies
- Baking cookies
- Laundering T-shirts for the art classes
- Other (do you have any special interests or hobbies that you would like to share?)

The Daily Opportunities is a fun committee that organizes a variety of social events for the school and parish. Some of these events include the Back-to-School picnic, Octoberfest, St. Patrick's Day celebration, and pizza family fun night. Our community has enjoyed the contributions of a core of wonderful dedicated volunteers in this committee over the last many years. A number of these individuals will soon be moving on as their children go on to high school. New volunteers are encouraged to get involved NOW and help keep this committee going strong. Please call a chairperson if you can help with the upcoming Back-to-School picnic on August 22nd.
